As
successful and blessed as Owen Oil Tools was, we were having
difficulties with some international expansions and with our
production enhancement added value strategy. Core Lab offered
Owen the best solution and strategy going forward.
Owen Oil Tools, as a member of the production enhancement
group of Core Lab, is in a unique position to add significant
value to our customers well completions program. We have
joint research projects planned with Stim-Lab, ProTechnics,
and Core Labs fluid and rock properties ision.
As a group we plan on not only taking perforating, but more
importantly
|
well
completions strategies, into the 21th century. Strategies
that will define success and effectiveness of a well completion
in terms of productivity and not in terms of penetration in
concrete.
After all, we are trying to effectively and efficiently
connect the well bore to the reservoir. What company is
in a better position to define the best technology to do
this than Core Laboratories ? Core Lab a name synonymous
with Reservoir Optimization and Owen a name synonymous with
Customer Solutions.
We look forward to the 21th Century Oilfield!

StimGun Assembly & StimTube Tool:
New Methods for Superior Production Enhancement
The StimGun Assembly and the StimTube
Tool represent the state of the art in modern propellant-
assisted perforation and stimulation techniques. The Joint
Development Team* for the StimGun Assembly was a recipient
of the 1998 Special Meritorious Award for Engineering Innovation
from the Petroleum Engineer International magazine. This
proprietary technology continues to gain recognition and
acceptance worldwide. Large numbers of successful applications
have been carried out using the StimGun Assembly and
StimTube Tool. (*Marathon Oil Company, Owen Oil Tools,
HTH, Computalog)
The StimGun Assembly consists of a sleeve
of proprietary, propellant-like material placed around the
exterior of a perforating gun. The shaped charges ignite
the propellant generating a controlled burst of high-pressure
gas. The gas enters the perforation tunnels and propagates
|
fracture extensions up to 3-6 feet from the end
of the tunnel. As the propellant gas rushes back out of
the formation it produces a scouring effect
removing debris generated during the perforating event.
The result is greatly enhanced wellbore communication and
production potential.
For hard-rock applications impressive production
enhancements have been achieved by the use of Owen Oil Tools
deep penetrating Raptor charge in combination with
the propellant sleeve. Equally impressive results have been
obtained in unconsolidated sands with the combined use of
propellant and KISS charges manufactured by Owen Oil
Tools.
In areas requiring hydraulic fracture methods the
use of the StimGun Assembly can greatly enhance the
results of the operations. Enhanced wellbore communication
produced by the effects of the propellant result in more
effective and less costly hydraulic fracture operations.
The use of the StimGun Assembly results in lower fracture
initiation pressures so that horsepower requirements, and
|
attendant costs, are dramatically
reduced. Depending on formation parameters it is sometimes
possible to eliminate the need for hydraulic fracture operations.
The StimTube Tool works on the same principle
as the StimGun Assembly but is used in the presence
of existing perforations. It consists of a cylinder of proprietary,
propellantlike material cast onto a specially engineered
support tube. A 40gr detonating cord running through the
center of the tool serves as the source of ignition. Multiple
sections of the StimTube Tool may be linked together.
A very significant use for this tool is in thru-tubing applications
where limited operating diameter precludes the use of the
StimGun Assembly. Another high-value application is
re-stimulation of an interval whose production has declined.
The StimGun Assembly is sized to fit Owen
perforating guns ranging from 2-3/8 to 7-0.
Product development continues for additional sizes. The
StimTube Tool is available in 1-1/2,
|
1-11/16, 2, 2-1/2 diameters and
lengths up to 6 feet. These tools are classed as 5.1 Oxidizers
and can be air shipped. They are surface safe, requiring
a combination of conditions not normally found on the surface
for ignition to occur.
The StimGun Assembly and the
StimTube Tool are available through the following
licensees: Baker Atlas(U.S. Wireline ), Computalog, Halliburton
and JAEX. For more information please contact Brent
Kirschner, Sales Representative Propellant Technology,
at Owen Oil Tools or one of the licensees listed above.
