Introduction to Oilfield Explosive Safety
Owen Oil Tools now offers a one-day course entitled "Introduction To Oilfield Explosive Safety" This course is based on the API RP-67 (Recommended Practices for Oilfield Explosive Safety).
The API RP-67 was developed to aid both operating and service companies in establishing explosive safety guidelines for their own operations. There are approximately 5 accidents involving explosives in our industry each year. Most, if not all of these are related to human error. It is important not only that these guidelines exist, but rather that they are followed.
This course is intended for everyone in the oil industry who may come in contact with or who will be in the near vicinity of explosives at the well site; from the operating company engineer or rig foreman to the experienced service company explosive user. Successful completion of the course does not certify that an individual is ready for the shooting compartment, but it does lay the groundwork and is a critical introduction. Everyone attending the class leaves understanding the possible ramifications of NOT following procedures. Certification that an individual can and will work safely with explosives is the responsibility of the various employers who can observe that individual performing the various tasks over a period of time.
Phase I of the course covers the basic types of explosives used in the oil industry, the characteristics of those explosives, and a discussion of the various explosive tools and their associated hazards.
Phase 2 is a systematic look at the API RP-67 and its various recommendations for specific practices at the well site including everything from establishing a safe loading area to what to do with pressure trapped inside a perforating carrier. Requirements for explosive trainees and explosives users are set forth, and surface equipment and down hole tools are discussed. Special attention will be paid to the development of a safety checklist for use at the well.
The course is presented in a PowerPoint format and includes multimedia material that holds the attendee's attention. It is a casual, interactive, format that allows for as much discussion as is required. Attendees will receive a reference manual and a certificate of course completion.
There will be a nominal charge for the course to cover expenses. If you are interested in scheduling a seminar at your company, please contact your local Owen Oil Tools Representative.
