Through the precise identification and measurement of injected chemical tracers returned in flowback samples, ProTechnics chemical tracer diagnostics offer solutions for many applications:

  • Completion engineers gain valuable insights into cleanup efficiency and mechanisms, proper operation of staging devices and impediments to post-treatment wellbore flow.

  • In smart wells, chemical tracer analysis clearly shows the mechanical operation of sliding sleeves in addition to zonal contribution.

  • When communication with nearby wells is suspected, SpectraChem tracers can positively identify communication from the treatment well to nearby offsets.

With the inclusion of CompletionProfiler production logging, production
performance can be conveniently and efficiently analyzed in tandem with tracer cleanup studies.

SpectraChem diagnostic services are a powerful tool for quantifying and understanding flowback in all types of completions, including single-stage, multi-stage and complex horizontal wells.

Plotted over time, SpectraChem analysis determines which segments and, more importantly, how much of each segment is contributing to overall flowback. Armed with this vital information, knowledgeable decisions can be made regarding:

  • Fluid type selection

  • Breaker selection and design

  • Flowback operational procedures

From these measurements, fracture cleanup and flowback efficiency can be determined so that completion practices can be optimized to achieve maximum effective frac length.

Multistage Completions In multistage completions, SpectraChem
tracers allow returns from each uniquelytraced stage to be identified. Sample analysis yields specific data for establishing zonal cleanup contribution. These measurements are critical to designing
and achieving a more productive frac treatment. Specific applications include:

  • Co-mingled zonal cleanup contribution

  • Flow-through bridge plug completions

  • One-trip, coiled tubing stage
    completions

  • Mechanical sleeve completion systems

  • Smart well completions

Horizontal Completions SpectraChem tracer services are ideally suited for today’s horizontal well completions in both conventional and unconventional reservoirs. Determining flowback profiles in these complex wellbore configurations can help increase operational efficiencies and production. Recognition of chemical interference in close-spaced offsets allows informed decisions concerning well spacing issues.

Horizontal applications include:

  • Treatment well flowback profiles

  • Nearby offset frac interference

Tracer Injection and Analysis

During pumping operations, SpectraChem technology introduces as many as 18 different chemical frac tracers (CFTs) into the fracturing fluid system. These 100% water soluble, HSE-friendly chemicals are precisely injected using the ProTechnics PT 4000 injection system. Injection is
performed on the low-pressure side of the pumping units for enhanced safety and operational flexibility. After treatment, flowback samples of the
injected tracers are collected for laboratory analysis. Using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, ProTechnics quantifies the presence of the CFT’s in the parts per billion.
