Stim-Lab Analysis plays a major role in providing analytical support services for
the other Stim-Lab departments, as well as meeting the analytical needs of numerous
outside clients. Tests range from basic wet-chemistry using an Atomic Absorption
(AA) Spectrophotometer on oil, water, and fracturing fluids.
Wet-chemistry services include the determination of various anions such as nitrates,
nitrites,
sulfates, carbonates, bicarbonates and chlorides. Specific water tests
include pH, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, water hardness, alkalinity,
and oil and grease content. An AA spectrometer is used to determine cation content
in water, fracturing fluids and oil. Some of the metals that can be detected include
iron, magnesium, calcium, aluminum, silicon, sodium and phosphorus.
Stim-Lab Analysis also performs laboratory testing of proppant used in oil well
fracturing using American Petroleum Institute recommended practices (API RP) 56
and 60 for sands and high strength proppants respectively. Tests to determine proppant
size distribution, spherically and roundness, acid solubility, crush resistance,
turbidity, specific gravity and bulk density are a few of the procedures offered.
For producers, a series of oil tests are offered which include API gravity, bituminous
solids and water content, and asphaltenes and paraffins. Paraffin studies are available
to determine cloud points, melting points, and formation inhibitors.
Other common tests performed for the oil industry include sieve analysis for gravel
pack design, gravel pack sand qualification (API RP 58), loss on ignition (LOI)
for resin coated proppants, polysaccharide (gel) content of flowback fluids, produced
sand analysis, and spent acid analysis (strength and ion content). These tests along
with our years of experience can help you solve most well stimulation problems.
Stim-Lab, Inc. welcomes special projects and will be happy to work with you on any
special testing needs. Please call or write for a quotation or proposal.
