Supporting Innovation and Knowledge Sharing Across the Energy Industry

As a longtime supporter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Core Lab remains committed to advancing technical excellence, fostering industry collaboration, and supporting the exchange of ideas that drive innovation throughout the energy sector.

We are pleased to host an upcoming SPE Gulf Coast Section Westside meeting at our Core Laboratories Auditorium in Houston, Texas. The event will bring together industry professionals to connect, exchange ideas, and engage in technical discussion on topics relevant to the energy industry.

The oil and gas industry continues to expand the use of unstimulated open hole horizontal multilateral wells as a development strategy in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB). While these complex well designs offer significant advantages, understanding the production contribution of each individual lateral has historically been difficult. To address this challenge, operators are increasingly leveraging advanced tracer diagnostics to evaluate lateral performance.

As drilling concludes for each open hole lateral, a unique oil-soluble tracer is displaced out of the drill string as the bottom hole assembly is pulled from the wellbore. Tracers can be placed in one or several unique locations along each lateral leg, offering flexibility in monitoring contributions from the toe, mid-lateral, or other intervals. Hydrocarbon samples collected during production are analyzed to evaluate the relative flow contribution from each traced section. These tracers typically remain detectable for weeks to months, depending largely on production
rates. This enables assessment of leg productivity and wellbore integrity over time.

This presentation explores the application of tracer technology in multilateral well environments and highlights several field examples demonstrating how these diagnostics can help operators gain a clearer understanding of production behavior and well performance.

Core Lab values opportunities to provide a forum where engineers, scientists, and energy professionals can discuss emerging trends, operational challenges, and innovative solutions shaping the future of the industry.

The SPE Gulf Coast Section’s Westside Study Group continues to serve as an important platform for professional development and peer engagement. Meetings foster meaningful dialogue among energy professionals while helping participants stay informed on current technical and business developments.
